Directions For Use

Lucidair Airpack

Directions for use: Grasp knobbed grip. Rotate tank in direction of arrows. (In the same direction as you would open a screw top bottle. Approximately one full turn) Place mask to face.

Breathe normally.

For use in the event of a fire or toxic environment

Directions for first time charging: Open valve by grasping grip and turning tank in direction of arrows until grip bottoms out. Attach quick connect. (Standard paintball adapter) Charge to rated pressure. Close valve by grasping grip and rotating tank in opposite direction to arrows until valve seats. Remove quick connect. Snap fit mask neck to top of grip.

Tank will become warm during charging, this is normal. Tank will cool upon being deployed, this is normal.

Recharging instructions: Remove mask neck component to access fill nipple (standard paintball adapter) Charge as above.

It is imperative that each member of the family are accustomed to the level of discharge, it is quite loud. (~80db) This is safe with short term exposure, however it comes as a surprise to most novice users, be prepared and relax it's just air, quite a bit of air. (30 liters/minute initially). It drops off in a linear (and intuitive) fashion. Most users will have a clear (thus lucid) idea of the remaining charge, by the volume, pitch and flow drop, of the escaping air.

Never return to a toxic environment under any circumstances.

Insturctions for assembly:

The Lucidair Airpack must be utilized in conjunction with the supplied mask, this is vital as the vents in the mask prevent the user from a dangerous lung over expansion. It is shipped without the mask installed so install it as soon as you remove it from the packaging.

Some of the many concerns we've heard range from...

Is it Oxygen? - Well, there is oxygen in it of course but it is simply breathable air, pure oxygen would be a hazard in a fire.

Can it explode if left in a fire? - No. There is a fuse mechanism known as a frangible disk, it is standard equipment on all pressurized vessels. The frangible or rupture disk safely releases the charge well before the burst pressure of the cylinder is reached.

Why does it come out so much at first? – The reasoning behind this method of delivery is to ensure that the user, even a novice, will be able to sense that the charge is diminishing, and that it is not safe to remain in the toxic environment any longer. A regulated air supply would be more efficient but less intuitive and in our opinion less safe.

Shouldn't it have a full face mask? – The way the air rushes freely from the sides of the mask the users eyes and face are protected from the smoke. There is also the issue of esthetics, we feel that no one is going to have something as unattractive as a face mask hanging beside their bed, even if they ever bought it (which we suspect unlikely) they would tend to hide it at the back of closets where it would be useless in the event of an emergency.

Shouldn't it have a strap. – We feel that again straps would detract from the appearance of the unit and render it hidden thus useless, also as the unit is, it is shareable, with straps it would be difficult to share.

Aren't you suppose to crawl out of a fire, so holding the Airpack would make that difficult. – You are suppose to crawl out of a fire because the smoke is not as dense at the floor level, however if you had a supply of air that would not be as great a concern. Getting out fast would be an advantage, crawling is not typically the fastest way of getting around. However there is greater temperatures higher up so perhaps bending over may in fact have some merit.

EXPLOSION HAZARD: Improper use, filling, storage, or disposal of this cylinder may result in death, personal injury and property damage. This cylinder must be filled only by properly trained personnel in accordance with CGA pamphlets P.1 and G-6.3 available from: Compressed Gas Association 4221 Walney Rd. , Chantilly , Virginia 20151-2923 . The fittings must be installed and removed only by trained personnel. Do not expose to temperatures exceeding 130°F when pressurized. Cylinder must be destroyed if exposed to fire or heated to a temperature exceeding 350° F. Do not modify the cylinder or valve in any way. Do not remove or cover the label. Do not expose cylinder or fittings to caustic or corrosive materials and do not clean with caustic cleaners. Charge only with breathable air. Most SCUBA dive shop will have the required facilities and personnel. Be sure to call and inquire if they can charge 'paintball' canisters. (The fill fitting is the same) Tanks must be hydrostaticlly tested every 5 years by an approved authority. Most SCUBA dive shops will offer this service. Check date on tank. Consider replacement of tank, this may be more cost effective. We offer replacement cylinders for $25 Cdn. plus shipping and handling. Click here. The cylinder is not a toy. Misuse may cause serious injury or death. This device is for escape purposes only, never attempt to re-enter a dangerous environment! Approximate effective discharge time 1 minute - 2 minutes. Fully discharges in ~ 4 minutes Check gauge monthly, if outside of green zone recharge.
